11.4.3 - Panama Canal
Discuss America's role in the Panama Revolution and the building of the Panama Canal.

For many of years people had been wanting a better and faster way to cross between the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans without travelling all around South America, which takes forever. The French tried to solve the problem, in the 1800s, by building a canal 50 miles wide across the Isthmus. The French company that was building it went bankrupt from all the obstacles they had to face and stopped the project. In 1902 the U.S. bought the French Canal and Americans began working on it in May 1904. Building the Panama Canal was very tough and dangerous. The working conditions were harsh and there was a shortage of materials. Malaria was a huge problem that killed many workers and it was carried by mosquitoes. Roosevelt had John F. Stevens, architect and chief engineer, eliminate this problem but it wasn't that easy. He bred spiders and lizards to feed on the mosquitoes. He also drained swamps and cleared all the vegetation and put oil in the pools. Malaria was almost completely eliminated by 1907. 44,000 people worked on the panama at a time. -Zachary P. Great detail on the Pan. Can. I really liked the stats and the fact that you used your own words. Remember to site where you got those facts:) Also I think Hung's suggestions, particularly about the Pan Revolution are helpful. Great job, Zach! Way to go Teddy Roosevelt! Bully!
