Great Awakening: One of its outstanding leaders was Puritain clergy John Edwards who told his listeners that only God'd grace or their own faith and works could save them. The Great Awakening made religion accessible to the people and church membership grew.
Second Great Awakening: Americans attendend revival meetings and joined churches. Preachers of the second Great Awakening were Protestant. They did not teach strict adhernce to church rules obedince to a minster. The people where told that they had the opportunity and the responsibility to do God's work on earth.

Vanessa,

Terrific account of the great awakening and second great awakening. The differences were evident. It was interesting how you pointed out the first brought the people into the church and the second brought the church into the people. It was an issue of the heart changing in the second versus fear of hell in the first. You mentioned Jonathon Edwards… what did you think of the concept of God as he outlined in “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” in terms of fear of hell as a motivator to be righteous?
